Sandra J. Pattie

You would think that as a president of a bank that I would be immune to scams and attempts of cyber crimes.  That is the farthest thing from the truth.

In just the past week I have received emails, at home and in the office, informing me that a package can’t be delivered because no one was home to accept, that my DropBox is going to expire and requires attention, that my credit card (at a bank that I don’t do business with) needs my updated confirmation to continue paying an automatic bill, oh - and the government of some small nation is ready to send me a million dollars.

What do these have in common?

The request to “just go online and confirm your personal information.” They are all scams, even when they use the name of a legitimate business.  Do not respond to any unsolicited phone call or email, no matter how official it may seem. If you share an account with another person, ask if they ordered or dealt with the company named before assuming they did and then find yourself caught in a scam.

Remember, BankNewport will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email.

If you realize that you did fall victim to anyone, please call us immediately at 401.845.2265 or 877.709.2265 (outside Newport County) so we may flag your financial accounts.  And if we ask you a few more questions in the branch or on the phone, please understand that we are just trying to protect you.

The more precautions we take, the safer your money – and your information - will be.
