Chelsea Groton Bank MAY 2018

Employee Spotlight: Get to Know Cody Elvin

United Way TeamCody Elvin, Assistant Branch Manager of the Pawcatuck Branch, wants to make a difference in the lives of the customers and the community he serves. His commitment to customer service is appreciated by our customers at the Bank, but Cody strives to give back to the community outside of the Bank as well. He spends numerous volunteer hours at the Jonnycake Center of Westerly, raising money for Special Olympics by doing the Penguin Plunge, and as a member of Young Leaders United.

When Cody joined Chelsea Groton Bank three years ago, he also joined the Bank's United Way Team, which helps raise funds and collect supplies for the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut. At this year's fall team meeting, it was shared that over the past six years, the Chelsea Groton team and the Bank have contributed over $250,000 to United Way through employee giving and food and supply drives.

Additionally, for the past three years, Cody has been the co-chair of the "Uniting for United Competitive Food Drive", which is held the last two weeks of May each year. In 2016, the drive was created to collect food for local food banks for the summer, a time when the demand for food can increase and food donations tend to drop off. The whole purpose of this drive is to help feed families within our community for the whole summer. Nearly 22,000 residents of New London County struggle with food insecurity each and every month of the year, many being children.

"This drive has many different financial institutions and other organizations collecting food items for the summer," said Cody. "We all come together for one cause: the fight against hunger." Last year, more than 30 different businesses in ten different industries, with over 100 drop off locations, participated in this friendly competition.

The United Way of Southeastern Connecticut is a great partner in our community; one that works with 21 agencies that have 47 United Way Partner Programs, in addition to their own 25 Programs and Initiatives, to help reach individuals in need in our community. From the Mobile Food Pantry to Higher Edge – College Access Program; from homeless shelters to the Tommy Toy Fund; as well as emergency services, crisis intervention, childhood services, health care, and a host of other much needed services, the United Way is there.
