Chelsea Groton Bank MARCH 2018

Employee Spotlight on Miria Toth and her Passion for Education

Miria TothMiria Toth, AS, Community Education Officer at Chelsea Groton Bank has always had a passion for education and community. Prior to joining Chelsea Groton Bank, she was the Marketing Director for Norwich Community Development Corporation (NCDC), where she developed public events in conjunction with other community organizations and city agencies, oversaw economic development activities, and managed the NCDC's marketing efforts. Prior to that, she was a reading intervention consultant at Sayles Elementary School in Baltic, where she developed lessons, taught classes and tracked the progress of students.

Since joining Chelsea Groton Bank last summer, she has brought her passions to classrooms, branches and community centers across the Bank's market area. On Thursday, March 22, she will lead Chelsea Groton Bank's 12th Annual Money Madness seminar for over 200 area high school students and teachers.

"The Money Madness seminar was started in conjunction with the founding of the Bank's Community Education program over a decade ago. It's so important that we have an opportunity to work with these teens each year, to educate them on a range of topics that may not be covered in the classroom," explained Miria. "They may not realize that financial decisions made as teens can stay with them for a long time. Financial literacy is such an important life skill, and I'm thrilled to be able to continue this program so we can reach teens before they start making monetary decisions as young adults."

Nine area schools are expected to fill the seats at the Crozier Williams Student Center at Connecticut College: Academy of the Holy Family, Fitch High School, Lyman Memorial High School, Marine Science Magnet High School, Grasso Tech, Norwich Free Academy, Wheeler High School, Montville High School, and Waterford High School.

The half-day seminar features two speakers, Matthew Dutrumble, owner of Craftsman Cliff Roasters, a coffee shop which will be opening soon in Norwich, and Avery Gaddis, Director of Urban Affairs for the CT Senate Republican Office. The day will also include several break-out sessions presented by representatives from the United Way, SERAC, William W. Backus Hospital, Delta Defense and Training, Higher Edge, and Valenti Auto Dealers. Topics will include: costs of gambling, eating healthfully on a budget, identity theft, education financing, college success, the importance of saving, and tips on buying a vehicle.

In addition to the Money Madness program, Chelsea Groton Bank recently launched the Chelsea U Student Banking Program, which includes a checking and savings account, as well as a series of education classes aimed at teaching teens and young adults the basics of money management.
