Get to Know Marjarie Perrone and her now-famous Sock Drive

Sock DriveIn 2015, while Marjarie Perrone was a senior teller at Chelsea Groton's Waterford branch, Marjarie decided to put a sock drive together after volunteering at a local soup kitchen and realizing there was a need for warm, dry socks in the community. The Waterford branch and members of the community came together, and donated 172 pairs of socks in one month alone. The socks were donated to New London Homeless Hospitality Center (NLHHC).

"At Chelsea Groton Bank, we always strive to serve our community," said Perrone. "Seeing the condition of the socks that some of the guests at the soup kitchen were wearing broke my heart. I realized there was a real need for this often overlooked item."

Over the last 30 months, Marjarie has continued to collect socks and make donations. She brought the mission with her when she became a Customer Service Specialist at the Salem branch, and even shared the initiative with her bowling league. Donations from her Chelsea Groton network of customers and colleagues, as well as her social circle, continue to pour in.

"While some folks would view that initial drive as successful and would call it a day, Marjarie was passionate about the cause," explained Lori Dufficy, SVP, Director of Sales and Service at Chelsea Groton Bank. "She was committed to continuing to help those around her, and has made a huge impact on those she has served, and those who work alongside her each day."

In addition to donating to the NLHHC, donations have also been made to the New London Covenant Shelter. To date, over 1,850 pairs of socks, as well as many other clothing items, have been donated and Marjarie doesn't plan on stopping anytime soon!
