4 Ways to Welcome Spring!

BRINGING NEWS AND INFORMATION
TOGETHER FOR YOU.

Regan Nichols Dear Friend,

Winter seemed as though it would never end this year, but when I see cherry trees, daffodils and tulips popping into bloom and the return of robins and red-winged blackbirds, I'm excited to get outdoors to search out the local treasures that were buried under a blanket of snow for months. My first stops are:

  • Ayers Gap, Franklin, Conn. A cascading waterfall and footpath through a cool green gorge, beautiful hemlocks, a fabulous view of Franklin's countryside and a blazed trail highlight this tranquil, memorable spot.
  • Uncas Leap Falls, Norwich, Conn. These falls are mesmerizing. Legend has it Uncas, chief of the Mohegans, led his tribe against the Narragansetts in the surrounding area in the 1640s. When the battle was lost, Mohegan warriors leapt into the 40 foot falls, rather than surrender.
  • Chelsea Botanical Gardens, Norwich, Conn. Sponsors, volunteers and board members are building a world-class botanical garden within the historic 400-acre Mohegan Park. You can help and have fun—attend the Seventh Annual Butterfly Pavilion June 12 – 15!
  • Coogan Farm, Mystic, Conn. 600-plus donors have saved 45 acres of historical landscape—with four habitats, two watersheds and more than ten "high priority" species. Coogan Farm is open to the public free of charge.

Ayers Gap and Coogin Farm have been protected for everyone to enjoy; Mohegan and Norwich area leaders hope to create a park honoring Uncas Leap Falls' rich history. Chelsea Botanical Gardens is a vision progressing toward reality. In each case, life and energy abound.

Chelsea Groton Bank offers life-enhancing vitality as well. As we approach our 160th anniversary this July, we're celebrating the growth and development of our community—customers, grant recipients, likeminded organizations and many others. We're thrilled we've had a hand in sustaining their success in our community, and can't wait to continue making a positive difference in your life and the communities you care about.

With best wishes,

Regan Nichols
