Celebrate Small Business Saturday

Small Business SaturdaySmall Business Saturday was created in 2010 to encourage consumers to give business to small, local, brick and mortar businesses.

There are many benefits to shopping small. For one, small businesses are the engines that power our national economy, making up nearly 65% of the U.S. workforce private sector jobs, according to the Small Business Association. And, every dollar spent at small independently owned businesses is returned threefold to the local economy, meaning the money you spend is supporting your local community and in turn, the national economy, in a big way. Shopping local is also good for the environment, since local shops usually carry local products, and less traffic and air pollution is created from moving products.

Looking for small businesses to support this holiday season?
The Eastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce is hosting a holiday shopping trail this year, which starts on Small Business Saturday and features area businesses and seasonal specials.

Here's How it Works:

  • Beginning on Small Business Saturday, November 24, and continuing for two weeks until Sunday, December 9, individuals can pick up a Holiday Shopping Trail passport at participating venues throughout eastern CT.
  • Shoppers will accumulate stickers in their passports by making purchases at shops, restaurants, and other local businesses.
  • These stickers will enter participants into a special drawing for prizes, including gift cards and certificates, gadgets, or even free roundtrip airfare to Dublin courtesy of Aer Lingus.
  • For more info, including participating shops, sale information, and prizes, visit the Chamber's website.

Let us know how you support small business.
The Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) encourages consumers to join the "go local" movement by shopping, dining and banking locally and sharing their activities on Facebook and Twitter. If you have a favorite local purchase you make this holiday season, post about it using the hashtag #GoLocalHolidays, or if you're supporting small businesses throughout the year, use the hashtag #GoLocal, to help spread the word of all you can purchase and enjoy in your local community.
