Chelsea Groton Bank Invites Area Teachers to Apply for Financial Literacy Grants

ClassroomFourteen years ago, Chelsea Groton launched the Bank's Community Education program, focused on providing free financial education classes and resources to schools, non-profits and businesses, as well as our customer-base. In 2016, Chelsea Groton introduced the Teacher Grant program which enables teachers to have the financial means to provide additional hands-on educational programming in their classrooms.

The Teacher Grant program requires teachers to teach six sessions of the Money Smart Education program in the 2018/19 school year, attend a one hour train-the-trainer meeting, give pre- and post-program tests to their class and take a field trip to visit Chelsea Groton Bank. In return, teachers will receive a $500 grant for use in their classrooms.

"At a time where budgets are uncertain and classroom teachers may be receiving less than they need to purchase supplies, take field trips, or do creative activities, this grant is a win-win for any teacher in our service area," says Miria Toth, Community Education Officer for Chelsea Groton Bank. In addition to the grant, Toth will go into the classrooms to support the teacher, providing educational assistance. New this year, the Teacher Grant program has been opened up to local non-profits who would like to offer financial education as a part of their programming. Interested non-profits will go through the same application process as a teacher.

"We believe in creating strong community partnerships and educating our youth to become independent and well educated financial thinkers," says Toth. "Chelsea Groton Bank is very excited to not only be offering these grants to schools, but to nonprofits that have clients who will truly benefit from financial education."

Current awardees this year are educators from Norwich Free Academy, Montville High School, Sayles Elementary School in Sprague, Fitch High School, and Waterford High School, with several more grants pending.

"The students in my class really enjoyed having Chelsea Groton Bank come in and do financial education programs last year," says 5th grade teacher Kelly Christie from Sayles School. "I am looking forward to continuing the partnership this year. The $500 grant really opens up a lot of opportunities for my class."

In addition to the teacher grant, Chelsea Groton's financial education programs are offered free of charge for any business, nonprofit or community group interested in having them in to speak. Educational classes span a broad array of topics and can be tailored to the needs of the group.
